API CIMIS Database Exceeds 1,000,000 Record Mark

Optimum Solutions Alliance (OSA), the API contractor for the CIMIS (Common Industry Material Identification Standards) Data Center, announced that the CIMIS database has exceeded the 1,000,000 record mark.  The CIMIS database provides participating companies with highly structured material data for commodity components. CIMIS data has been successfully utilized in 1998 to develop technically accurate and consistent descriptions and parametric search keys for both legacy and emerging ERP Material Management systems. The data content has been developed by a cross-section of industry experts from leading U.S. and international corporations.

In addition to providing content, the database also provides a unique 12 digit numeric part number for each item. This code is a common identifier to be used in all company to company commercial communication involving the underlying item in EDI and E-Commerce transactions. Use of the CIMIS code is intended to eliminate the need proprietary part number translation tables that are the current basis for all mature EDI systems.

The development and use of the standards-based catalogs is intended to eliminate confusion and errors in communications and reduce operating costs by promoting the use of electronic commerce in the petroleum and construction industries.

Pipe, valves and fittings were chosen for the initial database effort since a significant number of units in this category are transacted on many engineering and construction projects.

Products under development for release in 1999 include standard process valves, expansion of pipe specifications to cover large OD, low temperature materials, and plumbing related materials for the plumbing/HVAC industry. In addition, tentative plans call for addressing the fastener domain and such other areas as time and staffing permit.
