In addition to providing content, the database also provides a unique 12 digit numeric part number for each item. This code is a common identifier to be used in all company to company commercial communication involving the underlying item in EDI and E-Commerce transactions. Use of the CIMIS code is intended to eliminate the need proprietary part number translation tables that are the current basis for all mature EDI systems.
The development and use of the standards-based catalogs is intended to eliminate confusion and errors in communications and reduce operating costs by promoting the use of electronic commerce in the petroleum and construction industries.
Pipe, valves and fittings were chosen for the initial database effort since a significant number of units in this category are transacted on many engineering and construction projects.
Products under development for release in 1999 include standard process valves, expansion of pipe specifications to cover large OD, low temperature materials, and plumbing related materials for the plumbing/HVAC industry. In addition, tentative plans call for addressing the fastener domain and such other areas as time and staffing permit.
